Within the course Selected Chapters of Applied Chemistry students gain detailed knowledge of some fields of applied chemistry.

Outcome:

Students will gain deeper insights into complex chemical products and production process.

  • Detergents. Surfactants (types, synthesis).
  • Components of detergents. Detergent production processes.
  • Renewable raw materials in chemical industry.
  • Biorefinery.
  • Lipids as raw materials in chemical industry.
  • Carbohydrates as raw materials in chemical industry.
  • Terpenoids as raw materials in chemical industry.
  • Catalytic cycle and the main properties of catalysts in industrial processes.
  • Homogenous catalysis. Examples of homogenous catalysis.
  • Heterogeneous catalysis. Examples of heterogeneous catalysis.
  • Biocatalysis in chemical industry.
  • Photocatalysis.
  • PT catalysis and inverse PT catalysis, examples.
  • Petroleum extraction and transportation.
  • Refined petroleum products.
  • Primary processes of petroleum refining (distillation, absorption, adsorption, extraction).
  • Secondary processes of petroleum refining (cracking, hydrocracking, reforming, isomerization, polymerization, alkylation, extraction process).

Syllabus:

  • Elemental analysis of zeolites (XRF and ICP-OES).
  • Techniques of zeolite characterization (SEM, BET, XRD and solid-state NMR).
  • Dealumination of zeolites and the influence on ion-exchange capacity of zeolites.
  • Analysis of non-ionic surfactants (spectrophotometric and HPLC analysis).
  • Studying the properties of surfactants (determination of critical micelle concentration, cloud point and emulsifying capacity).
  • Photochemical degradation of azo dyes.
  • Catalytic hydrogenation of edible oil.
  • Analysis of coatings (analysis of binders, solvents and pigments).
  • Hydrolysis of starch into glucose.
