During the course, students acquire knowledge about: metabolism of xenobiotics, bioinactivation and bioactivation, toxicology of free radicals, interactions of reactive intermediates with cellular molecules and their toxic implications; methods for the identification, isolation and characterization of products of these interactions; the most important classes of toxic substances and biochemical aspects of their influence on organ function.


Acquired knowledge will allow students to solve problems related to investigation of the xenobiotic metabolism, examination of foreign substances toxic effects, identification of the markers of toxic effects and development of the methods for their determination.

  1. The enzymology of xenobiotic biotransformation: multiple substrates and multiple enzymes.  Enzymes - distribution, expression and regulation, role in the bioinactivation and bioactivation of foreign substances.
  2. Isolation and characterization of biomolecules modified with xenobiotics. Identification of DNA adducts. Mutagenesis, carcinogenesis and teratogenesis.
  3. Toxicology of free radicals. Subcellular sites of xenobiotic-induced free-radical generation. Biological reactivity of free radicals. Lipid peroxidation. Modifications of proteins and DNA. Free radical defense. Examples free-radical-mediated tissue injury. Molecular and cellular aspects of free radical toxicity (alterations of gene expression, changes in cell signal transduction, chemical carcinogenesis).
  4. Chemical substances – toxic agents – toxic effects. Toxic effects of the gases, organic solvents, heavy metals, pesticides, food additives, drugs and radioactive materials.
  5. Biochemical aspects of influence of toxicants on organ function: hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, hematotoxicity, neurotoxicity, genotoxicity, imunotoxicity.
