The Master's academic study program "Environmental Chemistry" lasts one year (two semesters) and allows the student to win 60 ECTS. To enroll in master's academic studies, at least 240 ECTS from first degree studies - basic academic studies are required. The minimum requirement for applying for master's academic studies is that the candidate has acquired at least 60 ESPB in subjects from the field of chemical or biochemical sciences in his previous education. Candidates who apply for admission to the Master's academic studies in Environmental Chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry take the entrance exam in chemistry (40 points are taken for the entrance exam and 60 points for success in the basic studies, which is scored in accordance with the Rulebook on Master's studies. A person who completes the Master's academic studies acquires the academic title of Master of Chemistry, and in the diploma supplement, which must be issued with the diploma, it is more precisely defined which master of academic studies the candidate has completed.

The study program includes one compulsory subject (9 ESPB) and two optional (18 ESPB) subjects, study research work (3 ESPB) and professional practice (3 ESPB), as well as the preparation and defense of the final thesis (total of 27 ESPB). Within elective subjects, students choose subjects that they did not take in basic studies and/or higher courses of basic subjects. Through individual work with a mentor, within the study research work and through the preparation of the final work, students are guided towards independent research work.

The intended teaching methods are lectures, laboratory (experimental) exercises, theoretical exercises and seminar papers. Bearing in mind all the specifics of this study program, independent work is foreseen within the laboratory exercises, which includes the use of the most modern apparatus and devices. The Faculty of Chemistry has the most modern instruments that will be available for training to the students of Master's academic studies in environmental chemistry.

Teaching is conducted through work with small groups of students and through individual (mentor) work, while work methods are adapted to the number of students (consultations, seminars, etc.). Special emphasis is placed on experimental work with elements of research work, which as a rule is done in teamwork in research (teaching) laboratories. The use of computers is foreseen in all forms of teaching.

Entrance requirements

Completed undergraduate academic studies with a workload of 240 ECTS.

Study programme goals

The primary goal of the study program is to build experts with special competencies and a high level of fundamental and applied knowledge in the field of environmental chemistry, whose master's degree (together with the bachelor's degree) will be recognized by all European institutions and which will enable students to find suitable employment or to continue doctoral studies in chemistry or related disciplines at a domestic or European university.

Upon completion of the master's degree, the candidate possesses knowledge and understanding that is based on, but also exceeds, the knowledge characteristic of the level of master's academic studies in environmental chemistry, which ensures the ability to develop and apply ideas in the field of research in this and related fields.

The main goal of the study program Master of Academic Studies in Environmental Chemistry is to expand and deepen knowledge in relation to basic academic studies.

This study program is a part of a modern education system, aligned with national education strategies, which provides staff with a high degree of expertise to perform complex and creative work on the renaturalization and remediation of ecosystems. The study program is compatible with representative study programs in related fields at other higher education institutions in Europe and the world, in accordance with the highest academic standards.

The individual goals of the study program are for the student to:

  • develops analytical and critical thinking and a dynamic approach to understanding and solving environmental problems;
  • master modern analytical methods and instruments;
  • become capable of preparing seminar papers and in this way lay the foundations for writing projects, searching internet data, and generating them;
  • train for independent and team research work;
  • through its teachers and assistants, it achieves synergy with experts in the field of applied sciences in the area of environmental problems.

In terms of knowledge, the goal of this study program is to enable students to:

  • improvement, i.e. supplementing basic education and professional education in the field of environmental chemistry;
  • closer familiarization with the principles of experimental and field work;
  • improvement of skills important for environmental chemistry such as state and process analysis, impact analysis or environmental risk assessment;
  • then literature searches and critical analysis of contemporary research problems, thus increasing the chances of employment.
Study outcome

Upon completing the study program Environmental Chemistry, the candidate is awarded the title "MSc in Chemistry".

Students will be able to conduct (both individually and within a team) all stages of a part of research within a research or professional project. They will gain the experience of working with modern instruments which are used in research laboratories and specialized laboratories for environmental chemistry.

Students will be able to independently apply standard and complex protocols in the study of the environment and they will be familiar with the use of computers in all stages of research work. They will be able to present the results of their work at scientific conferences both orally and in writing.

Upon completing these studies, students will have a wider knowledge in the field of environmental chemistry; they will be able to solve scientific and practical problems by applying analytical and computational methods. They will be able to work independently in chemical laboratories of various profiles and purposes (research and development, quality control, standardization, process monitoring, environmental monitoring, etc.). They will have the knowledge and skills necessary for working with real, complex samples and they will be able to study literature and present a critical overview of the collected data. They will have the experience of working independently with modern instruments and the relevant laboratory practice. They will be able to work on a research problem within a team, to present the problem in their final thesis and to defend the thesis.

Access to further studies

Diploma holders are entitled to enroll on doctoral academic studies, which have the workload of 180 ECTS.
