Goals:

The goal of this course is to help students master the basic calculations in biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology.

Students are completely able to do basic calculations in biochemistry molecular biology and cell biology.

Syllabus:

  1. Preparation of solutions in biochemistry. Buffers. Media.
  2. Introduction to statistical data processing.
  3. Basic calculations in cell biology; quantity and concentration of nucleic acids.
  4. Basic calculations in molecular biology: restriction digests, the analysis of fragments on agarose gel; the transformation efficiency; determination of molecular weight of DNA, RNA and proteins.
  5. The PCR reaction: components and setting up a PCR reaction; Enzymes, nucleotides, primers, the matrix.
  6. Basic calculations in biochemistry: determination of total and specific proteins; the purification factor and quantity; determination of specific proteins: enzyme activity.
  7. Working with bacteriophages.
  8. Labeling nucleic acids with radioisotopes.
  9. Centrifuging. Calculating sedimentation time.
