Goals:

The goal of this course is to help students acquire theoretical knowledge of the structure and reactivity of organosulfur and organophosphorus compounds and heterocyclic organic compounds.

Outcome:

Upon successfully completing this course the student will be able to:

  • understand the basic principles of binding of sulfur, phosphorus and nitrogen atoms in organic molecules;
  • understand physical and structural properties of sulfur and phosphorus compounds and heterocyclic organic compounds;
  • understand the nomenclature of organosulfur and organophosphorus compounds;
  • understand the nomenclature of heterocyclic organic compounds;
  • understand the typical functional group transformations, their scope and limitations.

1. Organosulfur chemistry

  • Nomenclature, physical properties and synthesis of thiols and thioethers
  • Nomenclature, physical properties and synthesis of sulfoxides, sulfones, thioesters...

2. Organophosphorus chemistry

  • Nomenclature, physical properties and synthesis of alkyl and aryl phosphines, phosphorus ylides...

3. Heterocyclic compounds

  • Nomenclature, physical properties and synthesis of five- and six-membered heterocycles with one heteroatom (pyrrole, furan, thiophene, pyridine, pyran)
  • Nomenclature, physical properties and synthesis of five- and six-membered heterocycles with two heteroatoms (imidazole, oxazole, thiazole, pyrazole, pyrimidine, pyrazine...)
