Goals:

Introducing students to the principles and descriptive chemistry of complex compounds as one of the most important areas of modern inorganic chemistry.

Outcome:

The course Fundamentals of Coordination Chemistry provides students with a systematic basic knowledge of complex compounds - from nomenclature and stereochemistry, synthesis methods to the interpretation of optical spectra and magnetism and the importance and application of coordination compounds.

1. Introduction to coordination compounds. Historical development of coordination compounds.

2. Nomenclature of coordination compounds.

3. Acceptors and donors.

4. Stereochemistry of coordination compounds.

5-6. Symmetry aspects of coordination compounds.

7-8. The nature of bond in coordination compounds.

9. Syntheses and chemical transformations of coordination compounds.

10. Stability of coordination compounds.

11. Kinetics and reaction mechanisms of coordination compounds.

12-13. Optical spectra and magnetism of coordination compounds.

14-15. The importance and application of coordination compounds.

Colloquia:

Remarks:

The progress test is organized once a year, in the seventh week of the summer semester and it is designed to test the areas which have been covered from the beginning of the semester.

Written exam:

70 points

Remarks:

The written exam is organized in every examination period. In order to qualify for the exam, a student has to have more than 15 points assigned for the pre-exam activities. In order to pass the exam, a student has to score more than 50% of the points.
