Goals:

The goal of this course is to introduce students to the laws of the atmosphere and how the phenomena and changes in the atmosphere occur according to these laws.

Outcome:

Upon successfully completing this course, students have acquired knowledge of the selected parts of meteorology and they are able to apply the knowledge in environmental chemistry.

Lectures and term papers.

Extracurricular activities:

Students do homework assignments, go over their notes, study and find relevant information relevant to their term papers and the course material (books, the Internet, etc.).

Syllabus:

1. The basic concepts of the atmosphere. Global warming.

2. The radiation emitted by the Sun, the Earth and the atmosphere: The basic laws of radiation.

3. The heating of the Earth’s surface and the atmosphere. The air temperature.

4. Water in the Earth-atmosphere system: Air humidity.

5. Water in the Earth-atmosphere system: Fog, clouds, precipitation.

6. Air pressure: Definition, the equation of state and statics.

7. Airflow: Forces which influence the movement of air.

8. Airflow: Jet streams, regional and local winds.

9. Atmospheric disturbances: Air masses, fronts.

10. Atmospheric disturbances: Cyclones.

11. Atmospheric disturbances: Anticyclones.

12. Atmospheric disturbances: Disasters, tornados.

13 and 14. The presentation of term papers.

15. The final progress test.
